Connect-Ability - Helping youth with disabilities

Connect-Ability of Southwestern Connecticut seeks to improve the transition of youth with disabilities into post-secondary education or employment and encourage the recruitment, hiring and promotion of people with disabilities.

A pilot program is being developed for Bridgeport high school students with disabilities to assist with their transition into adulthood.   The pilot will:

Through the Disabilities Task Force’s Business Advisory Council (BAC) Connect-Ability will promote “disability as diversity,” to make the business case for including individuals with disabilities into diversity training programs.  The Task Force will develop activities and events to help employers become familiar with workplace accommodations, and to develop job shadowing and internship opportunities for individuals with disabilities, giving employers an opportunity to see the person’s abilities, and not focus on their disabilities.

Transportation continues to be a significant barrier to continuing education and in obtaining gainful employment.  Connect-Ability’s initiative will identify approaches to improve transportation options for students with disabilities transitioning into college or jobs.

Connect-Ability is a project of The WorkPlace, Inc.
