The Bridgeport-based WorkPlace is receiving a $3.4 million federal grant to help parents gain access to child care and provide training programs so they can obtain better paying jobs. The grant from the U.S. Department of Labor was announced Tuesday by members of Connecticut’s congressional delegation.

“No working family’s desire to train for and seek better-paying jobs should be put on hold because of lack of access to child care,” said U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy and U.S Representatives Jim Himes and Rosa DeLauro.

“The funding will make it a little easier to for working parents to reach goals that will ensure a bright, healthy future for themselves and their families—all while making sure their children receive quality, affordable child care,” they said.

“We congratulate The WorkPlace for their tireless efforts in helping individuals prepare for the jobs of today and tomorrow, and applaud the U.S. Department of Labor for this wise investment in our community,” they said.

Joe Carbone, President and CEO of The WorkPlace, said he’s grateful for the funding.

“We are grateful to the U.S. Department of Labor for this opportunity to provide foundation and occupational skills training as well as support services to working parents,” Carbone said. “The grant enables us to address a significant challenge for working parents by counseling families on available daycare options and matching training/work schedules with available transportation options.”
